CURIOSITIES ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALICANTE

1. Use as an airfield. The land where the Control Tower stands (building 27 on the University of Alicante campus map) was used as an airfield from 1911 to 1978. The Control Tower itself was built in 1940.

In 1927, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, aviator and renowned author of The Little Prince, made a stopover at this airfield and wrote this opinion about Alicante: “I walk around without a coat, amazed by this ‘Arabian Nights’ evening, by the palm trees, the mild stars, and a sea so discreet that it can neither be heard nor seen, barely even breathing”.

2. Transhumance. A section of the Cañada Real Conquense, one of the ten major drove roads of the Iberian Peninsula, runs through the University of Alicante. In remembrance of this, since 2017, a flock of sheep walks along the university’s drove road every October. In this way, transhumance—declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO—is highlighted and celebrated. Transhumance is defined as a type of pastoralism in continuous movement, involving the relocation of livestock guided by humans from winter grazing lands to summer pastures and vice versa.
